But for others, medications aren’t effective making surgery the best option.
Surgery may require having your colon and rectum removed and the surgeon creating an ileostomy, a hole in the abdomen to which a pouch is attached to catch waste.
For those living with an ostomy these challenges are nothing new.
However, an ostomy is no reason to sacrifice one’s love-life.
“An ostomy has no impact on a totally normal, wonderful, passionate sex life,” said David Rudzin, the Chicago-based national president of the United Ostomy Associations of America. People with ulcerative colitis, an inflammatory bowel disease of the large intestine, experience loose bowel movements, diarrhea, stomach cramps, and bloody stools, and sometimes have only seconds to get to the bathroom.
For about half of those with ulcerative colitis, symptoms are mild.
