IT has taken 35 years for James Mc Cartney to step out from his famous father’s shadow. In his 20s, the son of Beatles legend Paul Mc Cartney shunned his father, hated his new stepmother and descended into a dark world of drink and drugs.James said he finally turned a corner when he saw a vision on the family farm in Sussex that felt like his mother Linda. He said: “My darkest moment was when I saw the light.
James admits his life was turned upside down when his mother Linda died of breast cancer in 1998 at the family’s ranch in Arizona.
He said: “When I was 20 my mother died and I went off the rails a little bit. “I got heavily into Nirvana, a bit of Marilyn Manson, these heavy bands.
We would talk on the phone but we went a long time without seeing each other.
It was sad for us both.” But when his father went in for surgery for blocked heart valves in 2007, a year after splitting from Heather, he realised how important Paul was to him.
He said: “I started getting more into Class A drugs, ketamine. “All the family were concerned for me but it got to the point when they were just: ‘effin let James do his own thing.’ James went into rehab in Arizona but left shortly afterwards.
